 AB    Worldwide, the number of people infected with HIV or ill with AIDS
       continues to increase, as does the impact of the epidemic on families,
       communities and nations. Epidemiological modelling indicates growing
       endemicity of HIV infection in areas where the epidemic is mature, such
       as parts of sub-Saharan Africa and western Europe, and incipient or
       explosive expansion in others, such as Asia. The implications for action
       are correspondingly different, though in all parts of the world a prime
       focus must be on giving young people the information, skills and
       services they need to protect themselves. In Asia, according to a WHO
       study, prevention is likely to be effective, as well as readily
       affordable, in curbing the rapid expansion of the epidemic.
